Katherine made a significant breakthrough in the 2005 indoor season after several years of being just outside Britain's top ten women sprinters. She improved indoor her 60m best to 7.48 in January and then successively ran 7.44, 7.36 and 7.34 (2nd) at the AAA Indoor Championships.

She had run 60m in 7.52 in 2001 and 7.50 in 2003, in which year she was 5th in the AAA Indoors. That summer she went on to win the 100m/200m sprint double at the Southern Championships in 11.78 and 23.75 (pb). That earned her her international debut as she ran the first leg for the British 4x100m team a week later in Glasgow, and she later represented Britain at the World University Games.
In 2004 she had second places in the British Universities 100m (for Bath University) and Scottish 100m and 200m.
Outdoors in 2005 she ran 11.54w and 23.95 in the Loughborough International and ran pbs of 11.47w in her heat before 2nd in 11.55 in the CAU 100m. She ran the final leg on the third-placed British sprint relay team at the European Cup.
She was 4th in the AAA indoors and had a season's best of 7.44 for 60m and won the British Universities 200m in a pb 23.88 in 2006.
