My athletic story so far Joel Wynter 18 Oct 16 23:18Report

DISCLAIMER: This is a script for a video I'm working on so the grammar is horrible and there are some inserts just because.

Hello there my name is Joel. Joel Wynter. And I do athletics, primarily the long & triple jump. And my journey to get to where i am today goes a little something like this. It all started in the late summer of 2012 when this dude did this *. Since i was young i was pretty fast and since sports day was coming up and i just quit martial arts i decided to get into athletics because why not me. So after a couple months working with these bad boys I did my first out of school competition ever. It went a little something like this I came in 5th but the inaugural track academy indoor series was the perfect place for my first race. The atmosphere was incredible and it felt so awesome even though i low-key sucked.

My second competition was arguably more of a failure than my first* run clip* *stop on end* i got absolutely destroyed at Crystal Palace which was par for the course in the 2013, the first season of my athletic career. i got destroyed in my next race too but i was so hyped cause i got 12.33 which sucks, but compared to my 12.78 it was awesome at the time. This was kind of the high point of my year because after that I went on a consistent rut *the 12.7 club*. In the middle of this I competed in my very last sports day. After skipping the last 3 years due to injury i wanted to leave my mark on the school *sports day*. In a way I did that since i managed to get three medals i should of got gold in the relay but someone messed up. But we all know sports day don't count. The next competition i did apart from a wind assisted 12.00 * roll footage* was my first long jump competition after 5.02 got me 2nd on sports day i jumped 5.31 *and was gassed. and after a following 5.36 at my home track I knew I found my event.

After that at least the rest if my outdoor season went to shit in the* most colossal way. so yeah that just happened but I didn't let it ruin my day no my 200 did that for me*run 200*. Probably the highpoint of my day was this triple jump here it was my first and altho it looked terrible i was quite pleased with the 11.40 for my first ever triple jump.Three days later i went back up to woodford and knocked out an ok triple jump and ok 100 I rounded out the season with a 12.5 100 and packed it in. The next two months to three months were huge for me i started working out at college more and in doing so i went back to where it all started 11 months ago back to willesden and in my home town got two pbs and my first ever win. It was so awesome and still one of the best moments of my career.
So yeah that's the story of my first season.

Ermahghad 2014 was too crazy for me. Damn near competing every week training every other day and holy sh*t did it take a toll on me. In the calendar year 2014 I totalled 48 performances, including 22 races that is more performances than my entire first year. 17 long jump competitions and 9 triple jump competitions. By the end of June i was spent. But let's go back to the beginning when things were good. My first competition of the year came off the heels of my first win in athletics being the SEAA championships. And man o man was it good. Honestly I was just there to maybe get a personal best and get some more running under my legs. And the first competition was the long jump. On my second attempt I jumped 5.45 and was so happy with just that which made it even more surprising when i jumped 5.54 the next round, the judges came round to cut the field down and i was ready to go. But to my surprise I was in the top 6. Of course I was pumped, in my third long jump competition to be in the final. Low key the other jumpers were hating on me, like who this rookie coming out here and being in the final. Still I kept getting better in the 4th round I jumped 5.57 and the next one I pulled out 5.63 out of somewhere and i damn near fainted. To improve my personal best by 32 centimetres in one day was a dream come true. So the competition ends and we all know who won the dude jumping 6.90 obviously but the other positions were up for grabs. I was happy to get a personal best but to found out that i got third was surreal. In my third long jump competition and I came third in the south of England. For about two or three weeks I lead the long jump in London and boy did I milk that. After this I decided to primarily focus on the jumps and it kind of paid off considering how the 200 and 60 went that day and day after.

I did a couple of 60s in February just testing out the legs and set a pb on the anniversary of my first ever race. A pb that i would smash today. After my success in the SEAA i thought that for sure Middlesex was a gimme. I came into that competition going for gold. Which is when God smacked me with some humbling. I only got four jumps on the day so I was going hard all the time I fouled the first two and got a decent third attempt but by then my mind was out of it. I completely failed my last attempt and went home crying. Yeah that sucked. I ended up fourth which is the worst place in human history mind you. I semi redeemed myself the next day with a bronze in the triple jump and making it to the semi- final in the 60. But I still have nightmares about that first day.

After another wind aided performance in Woodford and a decent triple jump I went to Wimbledon did another terrible / decent 100 and got second place in a long jump getting myself a medal and a 1 centimetre personal best. Back at Perivale i went to my first senior competition to watch and found myself competing. It was pretty poor but I managed to sneak away with my first ever long jump win and decent points for the team. My first outdoor track win went a little something like this. Another subpar triple jump followed, and I was back on the circuit and won another long jump competition and again a sub-par performance in the triple jump and 100. A couple open meets and a personal best 5.89 long jump later it was redemption time.

The Middlesex Championships. And once again the long jump was first up. Bang bout 5.77 right off the bat and i knew something special was coming. Everything kicked off in the second round i jumped a windy 6.10 but i was gassed just to get 6 finally my next two rounds were hindered slightly by the fact that the 100 heats took place in between the third and 4th round. In hindsight it would’ve been better not to go run and you’ll see why. The 100 was terrible and it kind of messed up those 3rd and 4th jumps which is where I thrive. In jumps number 5 & 6 I jumped 6.01 and 6.02 and there is no way you can tell be if i didn't run that 12.5 into a headwind i couldn't have jumped further. Also you see on this 5th jump. You see this!!! A 6.01 capable of being a 6.20 if not for that landing. I got third so whatever but oh man.

One open meet and a 11.8 and 5.94 later oo. Don’t peep that 25.1 tho. And I’m at Linford Christie Stadium where I produced some pretty solid jumps but then. In that last round look at who just got a legal 6m jump. My triple jump sucked this year so imma just leave this here. I ran in the relay cuz why not but yeah. I had a disappointing day in Hendon with fouls in the long jump and and ok 100. The next day I ran poorly ( im seeing a pattern here) but jumped a solid 5.89. And another bad triple jump. A groin injury stalled all progress for me as you can see highlighted by my worst long jump performance to date where I just couldn’t jump at all and my worst triple jump performance to date. I was feeling good in December so naturally I decided to go out to the Brunel jumps and throws festival. Partly to scout the uni and also cause I hear the competition is good. I was so surprised when I jumped a 6.18 from outta nowhere. The annual trip to the track academy sprint challenge was fun. Where after a stomach upset I think I ran alright.

For me 2015 doesn’t really count I was basically at school or injured 24/7 so in effect it was like a gap year or a year off. The only thing to note was that I beat my old triple jump personal best on my first attempt of the season.

The reason I got back into it this year is because for my PE coursework I had to get evidence of me competing and I don’t wanna be using footage from two years ago. Even without winter training this season was kinda cool I wasn’t expecting much but I got more wins in this year than I had in my entire career. I went back to Brunel who rejected my application btw but whatever. For the first time in a long time the triple jump was the first event of the day and I had been having problems with my ankles and knees so I was unsure of how I was gonna do. Bang Bang Bang three personal bests in a row and I shut it down cause I didn’t wanna risk anything for the long jump. I low key thought I was just gonna go out there jump 6.30 and be like, so. I was so confident I did only one warm up jump. Figures how I spent the next five rounds figuring out my run up, only to jump a moderate 5.92 in the last round.

Bout a month later I made the two hour coach ride to Winchester with my team. And I did alright I was scared of how my legs would respond but for the most part they held up. I went over 6m for the first time that year and would of gone over 12 again if not for a foul. A few weeks later I was like let get back in this and went down to Guildford where I came second in the long jump w/ a seasons best to the same dude who beat me two years ago in the SEAA finals. In the triple jump I dominated for the most part and in doing so went on a streak in the YDL league for jumping. For the rest of the season I never lost a long or triple jump competition in the YDL. And I’m still under 20 next year so I plan to continue that streak. Back in May, In my first home competition since my groin injury in 2014 where I jumped 5.04. I was back for the senior league and there was no way on planet earth I was losing in my homecoming. In both the long and triple jump the same person Jake tested me for six rounds and brought out the best in me. Literally forcing to jump farther every attempt and I pulled out a 6.33 in the last round and a 12.57 in the 4th of the triple jump to seal both wins (all this on a bad knee mind you).

The next week my YDL streak continued and no one touched me in either the long or triple a windy 6.51 and a legal 12.49 won comfortably. In Newham where two years before I had reinjured my groin I jumped a metre further than I did back then a legal pb of 6.444 which stands to this day (but not for long). Conditions were perfect and I even saw a few Olympians and Paralympian’s which blew my mind. I even competed against Olivia Breen who is just pure class and a great person. My next competition was quite different I had a lot on my mind with exams the following week and my performance showed that. A solid 6.20 and a tired 11.66.

After my exams finished I went on holiday and when I came back I was out of shape bad so I worked a little bit and continued the streak at Bournemouth fairly comfortably. Not even the 3 hour plus ride to Portsmouth could stop me as that is where the streak left off. Even a nice 6.39 to boot. A flawed open meeting later and I went out this season as I wanted to at my home track jumping a windy 6.50 in one of the most fun competitions I had in a long time despite coming second. Followed by the most competitive competition I had in my life where three of us changed leads in the triple jump for all 6 rounds. And while the quality wasn’t that high it was intense. Until I put it to bed in the final round jumping 12.05 to win by 5 cm.

I guess that is it my athletic story so far. I can’t wait to add more chapters to this and improve. I’ll probably update this after the 2017 season but until then.
