Diary of an Athletic Nobody - Weekend World John Connolly 16 Jul 11 15:20Report

Tony, Ste Mac, Simo and Andy K turned out for the Wizard 5 on Thursday, a great little race that’s more suited to the, ahem, speed merchants than the fell runners. No Neil Kelly though, he couldn’t make it form work.

I raced again in my luna’s, it was so dry I didn’t expect any mud and was right. I started off slow, the first mile was very congested, nearly 200 took part and the first loop was on a very narrow path. Once it spread into the field I put my foot down and then on the road I really pushed hard. The first 3 miles or more were mainly road and predominately downhill, I took over quite a few runners then hit the slight uphill at the end in a good position. If I’d known I was 11th I would have pushed harder to get into the top 10 but my time of 31:50 was okay.

The race is newish and very well organised, I’d defo do it again - more importantly it raised £1,000 for Stockport Cerebral Palsy Society which was nice to see.

We had a strange warm down, the route was tougher than the race itself! Rewarded with a nice view though ;0)

Friday I ran a steady 7 ½ and finished the evening with another 4 ½ and a light circuit class.

I ran my first serious long run today since Edinburgh, Neil Kelly myself ran form the Sports Centre to the Park Run where we were by joined Tim Fletcher. I ran the Park Run in 19:23, bit faster than marathon pace, then we headed off to the city centre for more miles. The pace was steady, Tim ran around 10 miles, I ran just over 18 with Neil carrying on for 20 – average was around 7:27.

Big week for mile, 78 which is more than I ever done training for Edinburgh. Rest tomorrow…probably! Sefton Park 5 mile on Wednesday so I might ease off for Monday and Tuesday, skip the double sessions. Richie Houston from PLS has set up an after show event in Aigburth Peoples Hall so looking forward to that.
